Welcome to our Social Emotional Learning page!  This page is a collaboration between Lana Mabry the Behavior Support Teacher at Lyle and Sloan Kyniv the Polk County School Based Mental Health Therapist at Lyle.  We know this time of change and uncertainty can be very challenging for all of us.  We are here to help support both students and parents in any way we can.  We will be updating this page weekly, focusing on a character trait that students have learned about previously this year and providing corresponding activities, stories, and videos along the way.  As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns that you may have, our contact info is list above.  

Week 1  Gratitude Week

Welcome to Gratitude Week!  Gratitude means remembering what you have with a thankful hear.  When we practice gratitude we are pausing to appreciate or recognize all of the things that we might take for granted in our lives.  Gratitude practice is linked to enhanced happiness, optimism, and social support as well as overall satisfaction with school, family, community, friends and self.  What are some things that you are grateful for?  We know that we sure are grateful for all of our Lyle Students! 

Here is a video clip that might help you come up with some ideas of what you are grateful for.

Lastly, here a Gratitude Jar activity that you can try at home. 

Materials needed: 

1.  A jar or container that can hold slips of paper

2.  Paper, any kind will do.  

3.  Writing utensils -- crayons, markers, pencil etc. 

4.  Scissors (optional) 


Sit down together with your child and discuss the meaning of gratitude.  Discuss things you are grateful for and write those ideas on pieces of paper.  You can draw pictures, too.  Put your ideas on individual strips of paper by cutting or ripping pieces of paper into strips.  When ready, fill a jar with gratitude.  Any jar will do.  You can decorate yours if you would like with stickers or slitter or whatever you have!  You can start with just a few notes and make a habit of adding a couple more each week as a family.  Then tell your child that they can visit the jar to remind themselves of all the things they are thankful for.  This is a great practice to do every week!

Week 2  Compassion Week - *Kind  *Thoughtful  *Concerned about others

Hi Lyle Lions!  


This week we are going to focus on Compassion. I want you to find a piece of paper and draw a picture of what you think complassion is. You can either draw a picture or write a sentence. When you hear the word compassion, what does it make you think of? Tell someone at your house what it means to you or show them the picture you drew.  


Great Job! Earlier this year we learned that compassion means being kind, thoughtful and concerned about others. Does that definition match with what you drew or wrote?  How can you show compassion on a daily basis?


We are going to be doing one activity a day from home to show compassion to others. It could be helping with the dishes at breakfast, it could be writing a note to a friend or grandparent or painting a rock and leaving it on someone's sidewalk. On the next page, I will have a list of activities for you to do all week to show compassion.  Good luck and have fun. We miss you all.

Week 3  Perseverance Week

Welcome to Perseverance week! Perseverance means to work towards a goal even when it is hard. A goal is something that you want to accomplish or achieve. An example of a goal might be to read a book for 10 minutes each day, or to share your toys with your siblings when they ask. When we are practicing perseverance we don’t give up on our goals when they are challenging. That means that if we set a goal to read for 10 minutes each day, we don’t skip a day because we would rather be doing something else. Or if we set a goal to share with our siblings when they ask we don’t decide to not share because they want our very favorite toy. Perseverance can be really hard but it helps us grow and pushes us to reach our goals! When we are practicing perseverance we can use positive self-talk to help us reach our goals. We can say things like “I can do this! It might be hard, but if I keep trying, I’ll get there.” Or “I have the skills to succeed!”. Or even “I can find strategies that work for me!”. Saying these statements out loud to ourselves or even in our heads, helps us keep trying when we are doing something challenging! How can you practice perseverance at home? Minute to Win It Activity

Try any of these minute to win it games at home to test your perseverance skills! You can do these games individually or with a group, all you have to do is set a timer for 1 minute and see which group or individual can complete the game within the timer first. Remember, when we are practicing perseverance we don’t give up, even when it is challenging! So even if you don’t succeed the first time, you keep trying! We hope you enjoy these games and have fun practicing perseverance! 



Place a cookie on someone’s forehead. They have to use only their face muscles (no hands) to get it into their mouth.



Give each player three balloons. They have to keep all three balloons up in the air for a minute.



Fill one 2-liter bottle with something (Lucky Charms, Jelly Beans, etc.) then tape to another 2-liter bottle – players have to transfer all from one bottle to the other.



Tape an empty Kleenex box to a pair of panty hose, fill with ping pong balls, then tape around someone’s waist. They have to shake until all the balls fall out.



A two player game where one person has to wrap the other person in streamers, toilet paper, or something else



Push a sweet potato across the floor from one side of the room to another with just your nose.



Set up a themed obstacle course of objects around the room. Players have to go from one end of the room to the other around the obstacle course on a bath mat or towel.



Set out like 25 cups, filling all of them part way with water. Put a sticker on the bottom of some of the cups. Players have to pick one cup at a time, trying to find a sticker.

Week 4  Generosity Week

Hi Lyle Lions!  Hope everyone is doing well and had a wonderful weekend.  I am so excited to share this week's focus.  This week we are learning about Generosity.  

Generosity means to give to others without expecting anything in return. 

Can you think of a time that you gave something to someone just to make them smile or to brighten their day?  It could be a flower you picked from the yard, it could be a picture you painted for a friend or your brother or sister.   Giving doesn’t have to be something you buy, it can be something you create from home or it can be something you do to help others.  Last week, my son noticed the neighbor’s yard needs mowed and that the weeds were starting to grow.  He decided to offer and help the neighbor and mowed the yard and helped pull the weeds.  How did he show generosity?  He didn’t expect anything in return, he just wanted to help.  This week, I want all of you to think of ways you can help someone or give something to someone.  Again it doesn’t have to be something you buy.   Generosity is something that everyone can do.  You can save pennies and give them to an animal shelter or ask your mom to help you bake cookies and give them to someone.  

This week, let’s all try to find 5 ways to show generosity.  Put a smile on someone's face.  Check out the videos and activities below to learn more about generosity!

  • Find at least 5 ways you can give to others this week

  • Here are a few ideas and the final activity is a project you can make.

  1. You can give a hug or tell someone a funny joke.

  2. Draw a picture

  3. Help feed pets or take them on a walk with a grown up

  4. Pick flowers for someone

  5. Save pennies and donate to a charity in need.

  6. Make a Cookie Jar with Acts of Kindness:

  7.      a.  Get an empty jar with a parents help.                                                           b.  Get a piece of construction paper or any paper and cut into small             circles.                                                                                                               c.  On one side decorate any way you want.  On the other side, write              down ways you can be generous.  Ask a parent or older brother or            sister to help come up with ideas.

  8. Choose one cookie a day and complete what it says.                                                                                                                                                                                              We miss you Lyle Lions!

Week 5  Cooperation Week

This week is cooperation week.  Cooperation means working together towards a common goal or purpose.  A goal is something that you try really hard to accomplish or complete.  People set goals for things they want to achieve or get better at.  Some examples of goals that are related to cooperation might be working together with someone to follow a recipe when baking/cooking or working together as a team while playing a game or sport.  When we are working on cooperation two or more people are working together to complete a goal.  We use cooperation a lot at school.  Can you think of some ways that you have practiced cooperation in class?  How about in P.E. or out at recess?  How can you continue to practice cooperation at home?  Check out the videos and activities below to learn more about what cooperation looks like!

How is it better to do things together vs. alone.  How do you show cooperation in your life?  It could be at home, in school, at recess or playing on a team. Can you imagine trying to clean up all alone?  How can working with others make things easier?

How did RJ feel at the beginning of the story?  What did he learn about teamwork and cooperation? What made RJ change his mind at the end of the story? How can you show cooperation this week?


Here are a few different cooperation activities:


Cooperation Crafts

Get out any craft supplies that you have: toilet paper rolls, stickers, tape, construction

paper, etc. Ask a partner, parent, friend, or sibling to help you build something. Use your

imagination and work together to come up with an idea of what you would like to create!

Discuss what you will build, who will do what, and which materials to use. Talk about how

cooperation helped you build your craft. Would it have been easier to do the craft alone

or together?


Take this activity outside if you can! All you will need is a blanket or sheet and a ball of your

choosing. Using a sheet or a light blanket, work as a group to toss a ball with the parachute.

How high can you get the ball in the air without having it fall out of the chute? Use your

cooperation and communication skills to work together and see how high you can get it!

Week 6  Safety Week

This week we are focusing on safety, particularly summer safety! Summer can be a wonderful time for us to be with friends and family enjoying different activities, but there are some safety rules we need to keep in mind. Can you think of any summer safety rules? Hmmm. Which one comes to mind first? One important part of summer safety is to know your boundaries. Boundaries are about understanding and respecting our own needs, and being respectful and understanding of the needs of others. If someone is in your personal space or doing something that you do not want them to be doing you can let them know that they are making you uncomfortable. You can say something like ‘I am not comfortable with what you are doing/saying’  or ‘I don’t like what you’re doing/saying/how you’re making me feel’’ and then get a trusted adult to help you solve the problem. When you are out and about make sure to have a buddy or an adult with you, and we always want to make sure an adult has given us permission to go where we are going! If you are outside and playing around in any type of water, what should you be wearing? Hmmm… Sunscreen! Maybe a life jacket, or a hat too! We also want to make sure we are drinking lots of water in the summertime so that our bodies are hydrated for all of the fun activities we can do! How about when you are riding a bike or scooter or skateboard, what should we be wearing then? A helmet!! Maybe even elbow pads and knee pads too! There are lots of ways we can stay safe in the summertime. Can you think of any other summer safety rules we didn’t cover? We sure hope you have an awesome and SAFE summer!

Week 7  Summertime Fun

Happy last week of school Lyle Lions! We sure wish we could be together this week, but we wanted to make sure to send you off with some fun activity/project ideas for the summertime! Many of the projects listed below include bits and pieces of the social emotional learning work that we have done all year! Also, if you haven’t already make sure to check out our invisible string video that Lyle Staff made! Watch it all the way to the end for a special surprise! We hope that you have a fun, safe, and relaxing summer break so you can come back refreshed and ready to learn in the fall! We can’t wait to see you!!!
